Oman

The Balcony Hike is a well-marked trail that runs the rim of Oman’s Grand Canyon. It’s a 4 hour round hike and guarantees you some of the most spectacular views in Oman. Overlooking a precipitous canyon, you’ll find abandoned villages and daring goats that follow you along the way in the hopes of a treat!

This guy ate all my trail mix. He posed so prettily for photos though that all was forgiven.

Jebel Shams is the highest mountain in Oman, right in the heart of the Hajar Mountains. I’ll be the first to admit that this hike kicked my ass. 5 hours up, 4 hours down, ain’t no easy thang. But like all difficult climbs, the views at the top outweigh the effort expended. The pictures say it all.

At the top

Emerald pools, undiscovered villages and lush plantations, Wadi Tiwi is a must-do for anyone living in the region. The most fun I’ve had in a long time, there’s a lot to be said for scrambling over rocks and forging your own path.

Wadi Shab is all about the cliffs, canyons and caves. This short hike into the most wondrous underwater cave will have you splishing and splashing your way over rocks and through water – be sure to leave your DSLR at home and whip out that GoPro!
